Mac OS X:
Installing and setting up Thunderbird from the UVM Software Archive
Go to: www.uvm.edu/software
You will be asked to enter your UVM NetID and Password (same username and password you use to login to your UVM email).
After you login you will be brought to a page where you can select your platform. You will want to click the “Macintosh OS X” link.
Now that you have selected your platform, you can scroll down to Thunderbird and click on the “Download Thunderbird Now” button.
Depending on the web browser you are using (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc.), you will receive a notification that the file is downloading. Once the download has completed, open the file, which should be named “UVM-Thunderbird.pkg”.
You will see an installer window open. Click the “Continue” button, and follow the prompts to install Thunderbird:
You will be prompted to enter your username and password – this refers to your computer account (not your UVM NetID/password), and is required to complete the installation. After the installation is complete, click “Close”:
You should now be able to find Thunderbird in your Applications folder (within Finder). When you open it for the first time, you should be presented with the following window:
Ensure that the “UVM Email Account” radio button is selected, and hit “Continue”.
On the next page, fill in your name as you would like email recipients to see it, and your UVM NetID (do not include the “@uvm.edu” portion of your email address – it is included automatically), then hit “Continue” again. For example, if your NetID is “mkapoodl”:
Select “Done”, then “Ok” on the small window that pops up. You are then prompted for your email password, which is simply your NetID password.
You now have successfully setup your UVM Email account to work with Thunderbird. To set up the LDAP directory (to auto-populate UVM email addresses when composing email) see the article on Thunderbird and the UVM Directory.
