Recovering Silk and/or Zoo files on a Windows

This guide offers instructions for how to recover lost files or folders for UVM’s Silk and Zoo servers.  You will only be able to recover files and folders that have been backed up by the server between 3 months prior to the recovery attempt, and 24 hours before the recovery attempt.

This means that files and folders created and deleted in the same day are not recoverable. Additionally, any changes that have not been backed up by the server will not be recoverable.


Connecting To Your Server Storage Using SSH With Putty

Installing PuTTY

PuTTY is an Windows application that can be used to connect to your UVM server storage. If you already have PuTTY installed, please skip to the instructions for “Using PuTTY to SSH into your Server Storage” below.

  1. Visit to download PuTTY. You will be asked to log in using your UVM NetID and Password.
  2. After you have logged in, select Microsoft Windows from the list of platform.
  3. You should now be on the UVM Software Download Archive for Windows. Software is listed alphabetically, so scroll down to “PuTTY version 0.67” and click “Download PuTTY now
  4. A dialog box similar to the one below should pop up. Click “Save File“. 
  5. When the download completes, start the installation by double clicking on the link 
  6. A dialog box similar to the one below should pop up. Click “Run” to start installation. 
  7. Click “Yes” in the next dialog box to continue with the installation 


Using PuTTY to SSH into your Server Storage

  1. Now that PuTTY is installed, open it by clicking the Windows button in the lower left corner of your computer screen, then scroll through your applications until you see “PuTTY”. Click on PuTTY to launch the application.
  2. With PuTTY open, you are not at the point where you will need to specify which server you wish to access.
    1. To log into your UVM Zoo space, enter the following into the “Host Name” box identified below: 
    2. To log into your UVM Silk space, enter the following into the “Host Name” box identified below:

      If you are not sure which service you should be accessing, please contact the UVM Tech Team.
  3. Click the “Open” button, then a black box will appear asking who you want to log in as. Enter your UVM NetID, then press enter. Then, enter your UVM Password, and press enter again.

    *NOTE*: The cursor will not move as you enter your password. This is normal.
  4. You should now have successfully logged into Zoo or Silk!

Recovering Your Lost Files

Now that you have successfully connected to your Server Storage with PuTTY, you can begin the recovery process.

  1. In the black box PuTTY window, type in the “recover” command, then press Enter,
  2. Using the “changetime” command, you can access a backup from a time before your file or folder was deleted.
    1. Change the time to yesterday by entering “changetime yesterday
    2. Change the time to last week by entering “changetime last week
    3. Change the time to a specific date by entering “changetime mm/dd/yy

      *Note*: Backups occur nightly. As such, you will only be able to recover files and folders that were on your server storage when the last backup was run. Backups are stored for up to 3 months.
  3. You will now need to navigate through the backup and select which files and folders you wish to recover.
    1. To view a list of these files and folders, use the “ls” command (LS), then press Enter.
    2. If you are trying to recover a file or folder within another folder, use the “cd <Folder>” (replacing Folder with the name of the folder) to get into that folder, then press Enter.
    3. Select a File to add by entering “add <FileName>” (replacing FileName with the name of your file) then press Enter.
    4. Select a Folder to add by entering “add <FolderName>” (replacing FolderName with the name of your folder), then press Enter.

      *NOTE*: You need to enter file and folder names exactly as they appears. You also must use quotations around file and folder names that include _spaces_ and/or Caps.
  4. Now that you have marked files and folders for recovery, you can start the recovery process by entering the “recover” command, and pressing Enter.

  5. To complete the recovery process, enter “exit“, then press enter. The files and folders are not actually moved until after you type the “exit” command. 
  6. You can now safely close PuTTY. Your files and folders should now have been successfully recovered.
